Magpies - Hoarding and Self Neglect Support
The Care Act 2014 defines self-neglect as “a wide range of behaviour neglecting to care for one’s personal hygiene, health or surroundings and includes behaviour such as hoarding".
Magpies - Hoarding and Self Neglect Support in Sheffield
Sheffield Mind has partnered with the Sheffield Adult Safeguarding Partnership (SASPB) to confirm a two-year collaboration (2026 - 2028) to continue the Magpies Project. The project will continue to provide essential support to adults in Sheffield experiencing self-neglect and/or hoarding and responds to identified local need and learning from Safeguarding Adult Reviews.
What the Service Will Provide
Specialist one‑to‑one support: Addressing hoarding behaviours, aligned to Making Safeguarding Personal.
Staff will support people to look at lifestyle, explore the reasons that might be behind their hoarding histories and look at ways of changing behaviour. Through one-to-one and group support, people can access practical advice and input to address their home conditions and other difficulties that often accompany hoarding behaviour, such as social isolation.
Group Support: A planned programme including four support groups per month (central groups for service users and family/friends, plus groups in S2 / S5 - more details to follow). These groups provide a safe and supportive space in which to share experiences, gain wider awareness and get support from people with lived experience. Friends & family are welcome to attend the session, so they are able to broaden their awareness and increase their understanding of hoarding.
