Working with the Coroner

The purpose of this protocol is to establish an effective and consistent notification and information sharing process between The Sheffield Adult Safeguarding Partnership Board (SASPB), Adult Care and Wellbeing (ACW) and The Coroner in safeguarding cases and Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs). The interface between SARs and the Coronial Process can be difficult to navigate and practice across the country is varied.

SARs and the Coronial processes are parallel when running concurrently. Legislation covering the crossover is limited.

The protocol will identify the responsibilities in relation to the death of an adult at risk and information sharing between SASPB, ACW and the Coroner. It will enable both Sheffield Adult Safeguarding Partnership Board (SASPB) and the Coroner to be able to undertake their respective statutory obligations without compromising the respective tasks and enable these processes to proceed efficiently and effectively. This will prevent harm to other adults at risk of abuse and reduce the distress caused to the family of the deceased.
